Give him ibuprofen 800 mg (4 of the over-the-counter ones) every 8 hours to see if that helps at all with the inflammation. Make sure to stay on top of the inflammation - every 8 hours. Keep the leg elevated a little (on a couch or something), put ice on it to cut down the swelling, and stay off it for a few days. If it doesn't improve in a day or two (or is really painful, pops, or it is just plain freaking him out) go see a doctor. And for hell's sake, be nice to him while he's hurt. Order him a pizza at least since the Safeway guy doesn't cook. Also make sure he's healed by the end of the summer when we come to visit. Is this Tony Horton's fault?
I would go! I had a knee injury back in 7th or 8th grade that I decided to "walk off"... I ended up having to get knee sugery 2 or 3 years later because I didn't take care of the issue in the first place. What would have been no big deal turned into a big deal. I don't know how I forgot to tell you that at church.
If it is still swollen I think you guys should at least meet with a doctor to see what they think. You could always make an appointment and tell the doctor you just want a consultation before they do any major procedures. (meeting with a doctor is usually a ton cheaper than going to the emergency room or even an instant care facilities... but it all depends on your insurance)
